Environmental Health

We license, regulate, and establish retail food, hotels/motels, bed & breakfasts, public swimming pools, campgrounds, and body art establishments in Washington and Ozaukee County. Environmental Health Specialists are also responsible for sampling and inspecting small public drinking water systems, swimming beach monitoring, and providing radon information and test kits for residents.

Animal Bites and Rabies

Although animal bites are not officially notifiable by state statute, they carry a risk of infection with various disease agents. Contact your healthcare provider regarding possible need for treatment. The biting animal should also be captured if it is safe to do so because of the possibility of rabies virus transmission.

Beach Water Testing

We monitor the level of E.coli in the water at local beaches at a frequency determined by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. For more information, click HERE.

Drinking Water Program

We do not sample private well water. We do recommend testing your private well yearly for potential contaminants. Public water systems are usually operated by a municipality. If you have questions about your municipal water supply, call your local city or village hall. Click HERE for public water well lookup.

Licensing and Inspection Program

We provide inspection, consultation, and licensing services for restaurants and retail food, public pools and water attractions, hotels, motels, tourist rooming houses and bed and breakfasts, tattoo & body piercing, campground and recreational/education campgrounds.
